Horn strain kratom

Horn Kratom: Selected by Leaf Shape

Horn kratom gets its name from the shape of the leaf. Some Mitragyna speciosa trees produce leaves with pointed, horn-like projections along the edge. In the trade these trees are harvested separately, because they are picked out for their appearance and strength rather than their origin.

In this category you will find the Maeng Da range in four varieties: red, white, green and super green. Maeng Da is a Thai selection developed through grafting and is known for a relatively high alkaloid content, so the starting dose is lower than with standard powder. For more background on this selection, see Maeng Da kratom. For adults aged 18 and over only.

Horn Strain Kratom: What the Leaf Shape Tells You

Horn strain kratom is one of the few kratom types named not after its origin or vein colour, but after the shape of the leaf. Ordinary kratom leaf is oval with a smooth edge. Horn leaf has a number of pointed projections along the edge that look like small horns. The shape occurs naturally on some trees and can be spotted with the naked eye, well before the leaf is dried.

Why Leaf Shape Is a Selection Criterion

Growers who harvest horn leaf separately do so because these trees are associated in the trade with a stronger alkaloid profile. How big that difference is depends on the tree, the age of the leaf and the drying. So it is not a hard rule. What you can say is that horn is a selection, just like Maeng Da, and selections make most sense for people who already know the standard origins.

The Maeng Da Range in This Category

At the moment this category holds the four Maeng Da varieties. Maeng Da originated in Thailand and was developed through grafting into leaf with a relatively high content of mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. Today the name is used for potent selections from several growing regions, not only Thailand.

Four Colours, One Selection

Maeng Da White is the uplifting variety and is mostly used during the day. Maeng Da Red has the calmest character of the four. In between sit Maeng Da Green, which is hand-sorted by colour, and Maeng Da Super Green, made from larger, more mature leaves.

Dose Lower with Selections

Because horn and Maeng Da are selections with a relatively high alkaloid content, you start lower here than with regular kratom. A first dose of 1 gram is plenty to feel how you respond. Stay below 2 grams until you know the variety well. The dose principle is unchanged: a little usually feels uplifting, more feels heavier and calmer.

Do not use horn or Maeng Da kratom with alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines or anything else that sedates you, nor with MAO inhibitors. If you take medication, check with a doctor first. Kratom is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Do not drive after use, and plan regular rest days. Kratom is legal in the Netherlands and is sold to adults aged 18 and over only. Other rules apply outside the Netherlands, so check the law in your own country.

Frequently Asked Questions about Horn Kratom

What is horn kratom?

Horn kratom is Mitragyna speciosa leaf with pointed, horn-shaped projections along its edge. The name describes the leaf shape, not the origin or the colour.

Why are Maeng Da varieties listed under horn?

Horn and Maeng Da are both selections picked for leaf characteristics and strength rather than origin, which is why we group them here. You will find the full Maeng Da range in our Maeng Da kratom category.

Is horn kratom stronger than regular kratom?

Horn is associated with a stronger profile in the trade, but strength varies by harvest. With every new batch, assume you are starting low again.

Which colour should you choose if you have never tried a selection?

Go for Maeng Da Green or Super Green. They sit in the middle of the spectrum, so you get to know the extra strength of the selection without the profile tipping too far one way.
