Buying a grinder: what to look for

A grinder consists of two or more parts with interlocking teeth. Turn the parts against each other and the teeth break your herb or tobacco down into an even, airy consistency. It makes your material easier to work with and can give a more even burn in a joint or pipe, or heating in a herb vaporizer. Which grinder suits you depends on the number of parts, the material and the size.

2-part, 3-part or 4-part

A 2-part grinder is compact and simple: you grind and take the material straight out. Handy for on the go and for anyone who wants no fuss. A 3-part grinder has an extra chamber below the grinding section, where the ground herb drops through small holes so you do not have to scrape it off the teeth. A 4-part grinder goes a step further with a fine screen and a separate chamber that catches the kief, the loosened resin glands you can use separately. Want simple grinding, choose 2-part. Want your herb neatly collected, 3-part. Want to keep the kief too, then 4-part is the best choice.

Material and size

Metal grinders, for example in aluminium, are usually sturdy and durable and turn smoothly. Wooden grinders have their own characteristic look. Acrylic and plastic models are lighter and cheaper, ideal as a spare or for occasional use. Many compact models have a diameter of around 40 to 50 mm and fit your pocket, while larger grinders of 60 mm or more offer extra capacity. A smaller grinder is discreet and portable, a larger one works better if you regularly grind bigger amounts at once. Many models have a magnetic closure, so the top stays firmly in place.

Maintenance

Clean the grinding surface after use with a soft brush, so the teeth keep turning smoothly. Clean the grinder further according to the manufacturer's instructions and let the parts dry fully afterwards. That keeps your grinder clean and smooth.

Frequently asked questions about grinders

What is the difference between a 2-, 3- and 4-part grinder?

A 2-part grinder only grinds. A 3-part grinder has an extra chamber below that catches the ground herb. A 4-part grinder also has a fine screen and a separate chamber for the kief, the loosened resin glands. If you want to use that kief separately, choose 4-part.

Which grinder size is best?

For on the go a compact grinder of around 40 to 50 mm is handy and discreet. If you often grind larger amounts, a 60 mm or larger model is more comfortable thanks to the larger capacity.

Can I use a grinder for a vaporizer?

Yes, a grinder is handy for many herb vaporizers. Which grind works best depends on the device, so follow the manufacturer's instructions. Have a look at our vaporizers if you want to vaporize your herbs instead of smoking them.

What do I combine my grinder with?

Ground material is easiest to roll with rolling papers and filter tips. If you want to weigh small amounts accurately, a scale is a useful addition.
