McSmoke Magic Square: puzzle cube on the outside, grinder inside
On the table everyone thinks you've left a twisty puzzle lying around. Lift off the top layer and you'll see a regular aluminium grinder with sharp pins. The coloured squares are just the outside, you can't twist them loose. What does turn are the layers against each other, like with any other grinder.
Why a square grinder is handy
A round grinder slips through your fingers quickly with moist or resinous herbs. Here you push your palm against four flat sides, which turns a lot easier. After use you can just put it down without it rolling off the table.
What happens in each layer
At the top you break up the herbs between two rows of pins. They drop through holes to layer three, where a fine mesh sits. Only the powder-fine part falls through to the bottom tray. After a few weeks of grinding you'll have collected a layer of pollen there.
What you get
Keeping it clean
After every session, tap it out over a sheet of paper and wipe the pins with a dry brush. If resin has clogged the mesh, let the layers soak in isopropyl alcohol for a while. Rinse with warm water and only put it back together once everything is bone dry.
Frequently asked questions
Can I twist the squares like a real puzzle?
No, the cube is a print on the outside. Only the layers turn, horizontally, like any grinder.
How do I get the pollen out of the bottom layer?
Scrape it together with the edge of a card or a small spatula.
