Wormwood 10:1 Extract | Artemisia absinthium
Artemisia absinthium, known as wormwood, is one of the bitterest plants in European herbal tradition and has been used for centuries as a bitter digestif to stimulate appetite. The herb owes much of its fame to absinthe, the strong spirit that became hugely popular in the nineteenth century and for which Artemisia absinthium is the main ingredient. Its intense bitterness comes from the sesquiterpene lactones absinthin and anabsinthin. The herb also contains thujone, a compound that can be neurotoxic at high concentrations; the amount of thujone varies considerably by batch and preparation method.
For this extract, the dried herb is concentrated through a 10:1 process: every 10 grams of herb is reduced to 1 gram of extract powder, with a higher concentration of the active compounds than in the uncut herb.
Dosage
Use this extract sparingly and only occasionally: add no more than 1/10 of a teaspoon to a cup of hot (not boiling) water. Do not exceed this amount and do not use the extract for extended periods in a row, because of the thujone in the herb. Do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Use
Combined with a little peppermint leaf or anise, this bitter cup of tea becomes more pleasant to drink. Add the extract to hot water and let it steep for a few minutes before drinking.
Storage
Store the extract dry, dark and airtight in its original packaging, out of reach of children.
