Pink Lotus 10:1 Extract | Nelumbo Nucifera
Nelumbo nucifera, the sacred or Indian lotus, grows in ponds and marshes across Asia and has held a central place in Chinese, Indian, Thai, Japanese and Korean herbal tradition for thousands of years. Nearly every part of the plant is used: the rhizome as a vegetable, the seeds as a snack, and the leaves and petals dried for tea. In Thailand, the stamens of the flower are traditionally dried separately and brewed as a herbal tea. This extract is made from the leaf through a 10:1 extraction process: every 10 grams of dried leaf is concentrated into 1 gram of extract powder, with a higher concentration of the alkaloids present than in the uncut leaf.
Note the difference with blue lotus (Nymphaea caerulea), another water plant sold under a similar name in the smartshop world: both plants are called lotus, but they belong to different plant families with a different alkaloid profile. This extract is made exclusively from Nelumbo nucifera.
Dosage
Because this is a 10:1 extract, a fraction of the amount of dried leaf is already enough. Start with a small amount, for example the tip of a teaspoon, and only build up once you know how you respond to the herb. Everyone reacts differently to herbal extracts.
Use
Dissolve the powder in a cup of hot (not boiling) water to make a tea and let it steep for a few minutes, or process it into an empty capsule of your choice. The taste is lightly bitter and blends well with another herbal tea such as mint.
Storage
Store the extract dry, dark and airtight in its original packaging, out of reach of children. This keeps the powder at its best quality for longest.
