Wild Lettuce 50x Extract (Lactuca virosa extract)
Lactuca virosa, known as wild lettuce, bitter lettuce or opium lettuce, is a biennial plant from the same family as common lettuce and can grow up to 2 metres tall in the wild. The species name "virosa" is Latin for poisonous and refers to the milky latex that is released as soon as the stem is damaged. This latex has traditionally been known as lactucarium or "lettuce opium": in the 18th and 19th centuries it was included in European and American herbal formularies and pharmacies. According to a well-known story, the Roman emperor Augustus attributed his recovery from a serious illness to this herb and had an altar built for it afterwards. Of all lettuce species, Lactuca virosa contains the highest concentration of this latex; common lettuce contains it too, but in much smaller amounts.
This extract is 10 times stronger than the standard dried herb, so a smaller amount is already enough for a comparable result.
Dosage
For 1 cup of tea: add 0.5 to 1 gram of the extract to a teacup of hot water. Start at the lower end of this amount if you have not used the extract before, and only build up once you know how you respond to it.
Use
Add the extract to a teacup of boiling water and let it steep for 5 minutes before drinking. The taste is bitter; a little honey or another herbal tea can soften this.
Storage
Store the extract dry, dark and airtight in its original packaging, out of reach of children.
