Catuaba (Erythroxylum catuaba) - 50 grams

Catuaba is the umbrella name used in Brazil for the bark of several different tree species, traditionally used in Brazilian folk medicine, most notably as a libido-boosting herb. The exact botanical origin is less clear-cut than the trade name suggests: in practice, bark sold as "catuaba" often comes from Trichilia catigua or Erythroxylum vaccinifolium, and the name "Erythroxylum catuaba" is not treated in the literature as a clearly recognised botanical species. According to tradition, the Tupi peoples of Brazil were the first to use the bark this way, although that story has been passed down orally and isn't documented in historical sources.

Scientific research into catuaba is limited: there are no human clinical studies confirming a libido-enhancing effect, and health authorities such as the FDA have not reviewed the herb for safety or effectiveness. It's therefore sold as a traditionally used product, not as a proven remedy for any condition.

Dosage

For a tea: boil 1 to 2 heaped tablespoons of chopped herb for about 15 minutes in half a litre of water; this yields roughly 2 cups of tea. For a stronger preparation, 30 grams of Catuaba is often mixed with half a litre of spirits and left to steep for 2 weeks, shaking it well every day; a few small sips are said to be enough. Start with a small amount to see how your body responds.

Use

Catuaba is used both as a warm tea and as an alcohol-based tincture. Don't simply combine the herb with medication without first discussing it with a doctor or pharmacist, especially alongside other substances that affect the nervous system. Only use it if you're in good health; if in doubt, it's wiser to consult an expert first rather than experiment with dosage on your own.

Storage

Store the dried herb in a sealed container, somewhere dry and dark, away from direct sunlight. This keeps the herb at its best for longest and preserves its smell and colour.
