Buy Muira Puama: root bark of Ptychopetalum olacoides

Muira Puama is the trade name for the root and bark of Ptychopetalum olacoides, a shrub or small tree from the Olacaceae family. The plant grows in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil and neighbouring countries. Locally it's also known as marapuama or muirapuama. The related species Ptychopetalum uncinatum is sometimes sold under the same trade name.

Specifications

  • Species: Ptychopetalum olacoides (Muira Puama)

  • Plant part: root bark, dried and cut

  • Origin: Amazon region

  • Aroma and taste: woody, slightly salty and sharp

Making Muira Puama tea

Root bark is hard and fibrous. That's why you don't just steep it, you simmer it briefly. Bring half a litre of water to the boil with 1 to 2 heaped tablespoons of cut herb and let it simmer gently for fifteen minutes. Strain the tea and divide it over two glasses. The taste is woody and a little sharp. A little honey or a cinnamon stick softens it.

Safe use

Little research has been done on the use of Muira Puama in humans. Its safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established, so don't use it during that time. If you take medication, consult your doctor first. Keep the herb out of reach of children, in a dry, dark place in a well-sealed jar.

More herbs from South America

From the same region come catuaba, another tree bark from Brazil, and clavo huasca, a vine from the Amazon. Maca comes from the Peruvian Andes. You'll find more herbs for tea in our herb shop.
