Peyote cluster in 10.5 cm pot - Lophophora williamsii

Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) is a small, globular cactus from the Chihuahuan Desert in northern Mexico and southern Texas. It has no spines, but bears tufts of white wool on the areoles. The skin is blue-green. Peyote grows very slowly and forms new offsets over the years, creating a group known as a cluster. Small pink to white flowers appear on top.

Care

  • Soil: very free-draining, mineral cactus soil, for example cactus compost mixed with coarse sand or perlite. Peyote has a thick taproot and rots quickly if it stays wet.

  • Light: plenty of light, but let it get used to direct sunlight gradually. Too much sun at once can turn the skin red or yellow.

  • Water: only water when the soil is completely dry. Better too little than too much.

  • Winter: a rest period, cool, bright and almost dry. Always frost-free.

Legal status and safety

Peyote naturally contains mescaline, a substance on List I of the Dutch Opium Act. The cactus itself may be bought and kept in the Netherlands as an ornamental plant. Dutch-Smart sells it as an ornamental plant, not for consumption. Keep the plant out of reach of children and pets. Taking it abroad? Check the local laws first.

More cacti

Peyote comes in several sizes, such as a peyote of 1-2 cm and a peyote of 2-3 cm. To grow your own from the start, choose peyote seeds or the cactus growing kit. A fast-growing columnar cactus is the 50-60 cm San Pedro. You'll find all species among our cacti.

Frequently asked questions

How fast does peyote grow?
Very slowly. A plant often grows only a few millimetres a year, and it takes years before it flowers or forms offsets.

Can I split the cluster?
You can, but there's no need. Preferably keep the plants together. If you do split them, let the cut surfaces dry for a few days before potting them up.

Is peyote legal?
The cactus may be bought and kept in the Netherlands as an ornamental plant. See above for its legal status.
