White Willow 1:1 Extract - origin and background

Salix alba, the white willow, is a tree species native to Europe, West Asia and North Africa. The bark of the tree has been used in herbal tradition for centuries: the Greek physician Hippocrates described a decoction of willow bark around 400 BC, and willow bark tea was also prepared in Traditional Chinese Medicine and by several Native American peoples. In 1828, German and French chemists isolated the compound salicin from the bark, a glycoside that is converted to salicylic acid in the body. Later in the 19th century, salicylic acid was chemically converted into acetylsalicylic acid, the active ingredient in aspirin. This extract is a 1:1 tincture by Fit-UP: bark material and solvent are processed in equal proportions, producing a concentrated extract that can be dosed drop by drop.

Dosage

A tincture is usually dosed drop by drop and mixed with some water or juice. Follow the dosage instructions on the product label and build up slowly from a low amount when trying a new herbal extract. If you already use aspirin, other salicylates or blood thinners, or have an allergy to these, consult a doctor or pharmacist first, since salicin forms a compound in the body similar to the one in aspirin.

Use

Shake the bottle well before use, tinctures can settle somewhat over time. Drop the desired amount under the tongue or into a glass of water and take it that way. Do not combine the extract with medication without first checking with a doctor or pharmacist, especially if you already use blood thinners.

Storage

Store the tincture dark and dry, with the cap closed tightly, out of reach of children. Check the expiry date on the packaging.
