This article concerns the overhaul of the locking mechanism of an M Performance limited-slip differential, and not the supply of a complete differential with a locking mechanism.
Over time and with use, wear occurs on the M Performance limited-slip differential, causing it to gradually lose its locking function. While you can continue to drive with it, the differential will increasingly function like an open differential.
To resolve this, we can overhaul the limited-slip differential. In doing so, we replace all friction plates and adjust them to restore the original performance and characteristics.
In addition, this may be a good time to perform some upgrades. In our experience, upgrading this limited-slip differential can result in a more durable unit that retains its locking function for longer—and one that provides more grip and feedback on the road and track.
The standard OEM specification is 35%.
- Upgrade 1 (40%): Preload. A higher base value for the limited-slip differential reduces wear, maintains limited-slip performance longer, and prevents a return to open differential behavior.
- Upgrade 2 (50%): Modified pressure plates for a boost to 50% locking action, providing more grip, control, and durability.
- Upgrade 3 (60%): Modified pressure plates and additional locking plates for a boost to 60% locking action, providing more grip, control, and durability, and a setup comparable to how Drexler would supply a limited-slip differential for these cars.
All of these upgrade variants are designed for street and track use and tuned so that they do not produce any grinding or other noises when cornering and will not cause additional understeer. Aside from the price, there are virtually only advantages and no drawbacks.
